Three Thai Street Snacks I Didn’t See Coming

A tom yum crepe, seafood takoyaki and a bag of jackfruit for 10 baht. Three Thai street snacks that surprised me.

Three Thai Street Snacks I Didn’t See Coming

Thai street food isn’t all noodles and grilled meat. Some of my most-watched short videos are snacks that borrowed an idea from somewhere else, or are really just an excuse to watch someone who’s very good at their job.

A tom yum crepe

Tom yum is Thailand’s hot and sour soup. Putting it in a crepe sounds like a dare. This one comes from a stall called Oum’s Great Crepe, and the video shows how it’s made and what I made of it.

I won’t pretend it makes sense on paper. Watch it and decide for yourself.

Seafood takoyaki

Takoyaki is Japanese: little balls of batter cooked in a dimpled iron pan, usually with octopus inside. Thai vendors picked it up years ago and now it’s at most night markets. This stall does octopus, shrimp and crab.

Jackfruit for 10 baht

A whole jackfruit is huge, sticky and full of latex, and getting the sweet yellow pods out is a real skill. Market vendors do it fast and sell you a bag for 10 baht. The video is under four minutes and weirdly relaxing.

The practical bit

  • Tom yum crepe: Oum’s Great Crepe
  • Takoyaki: look for the dimpled pans at almost any night market
  • Jackfruit: 10 baht a portion in the video, from fruit stalls and markets

More street food is on the food page.
