Two of my more popular videos came out of the same Bangkok night market, a couple of months apart, and they couldn’t be more different. In one, a cook draws cartoon characters in pancake batter. In the other, I try to talk myself into eating a worm.
Pancake art, to order
You pick a character when you order, and the cook draws it freehand on the hot plate, in batter. Prices start from about 40 baht.
The stall has built a whole brand around this, and it’s as much a show as a snack. It’s the easiest thing in the market to love, especially if you have kids with you.
The sago worms
Sago worms are the larvae of the red palm weevil. In parts of South-East Asia they’re a delicacy. They’re also a serious pest, and some places ban farming them outright to protect palm plantations.
The video title says I dared myself, and that’s accurate. I’ll let you watch how it went rather than spoil it: eating sago worms at the train night market.
About the market
Talad Rot Fai Srinakarin, the Srinakarin Train Night Market, is a big open-air market in Prawet, out in the east of the city. Food, vintage clothes, bars, the lot. I went back in 2025 and made a newer video if you want to see what it looks like now.
