How much does a day in Bangkok cost? On a mid-range trip, moving around the city and eating mostly street food, it came to about $38 a day for me, which is roughly €34 or £29. That figure comes from a real thirty-day trip, not an estimate from a list of other people’s numbers, and it is broken down line by line below.
Most “cost of Bangkok” pages mix together hostels, luxury hotels and tour packages. This one tracks what a normal traveler actually spends on a room, food, transport and a SIM card, shows it in dollars, euros and pounds, and tells you which two decisions change the total the most.
The thirty-day numbers
This is the cost table from my Thailand guide: thirty days, mid-range, moving every four to five days, with a private air-conditioned room.
| Item | Rate | Total (30 days) | ≈ € | ≈ £ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guesthouse room, private, AC | $16 a night | $480 | €427 | £363 |
| Food and drink | $9 a day | $270 | €240 | £204 |
| Inter-city transport (6 legs) | n/a | $140 | €124 | £106 |
| Local transport, BTS and songthaew | $3 a day | $90 | €80 | £68 |
| Temples, parks, entry tickets | n/a | $55 | €49 | £42 |
| SIM, laundry, sundries | n/a | $35 | €31 | £26 |
| Thirty days | $1,070 | €951 | £809 |
That works out at about $36 a day across the whole trip, or $38 on a day when you are in the city, eating well and getting around on the BTS. Euro and pound figures use rates from 5 October 2026, so they will drift.
What a day looks like
- Morning. Moo ping and sticky rice from a cart, a Thai iced tea, a walk. About $1 to 2.
- Lunch. Boat noodles at Victory Monument, three or four bowls, or a plate of khao man gai. About $2 to 4.
- Afternoon. A temple or a park, and the BTS or a songthaew between them.
- Evening. A night market with som tam, grilled skewers and something sweet. About $4 to 6.
None of that is a stretch. It is what most people eat in the city every day, and it is also the best food in Thailand.
Street food prices
These are the prices on the menu cards in the guide, in baht, and what they come to in other currencies.
| Dish | Price | ≈ US$ | ≈ € | ≈ £ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Boat noodles | ฿20–40 per bowl | $0.60–1.19 | €0.53–1.06 | £0.45–0.90 |
| Moo ping | ฿10–15 per skewer | $0.30–0.45 | €0.26–0.40 | £0.23–0.34 |
| Som tam | ฿40–60 | $1.19–1.79 | €1.06–1.59 | £0.90–1.35 |
| Khao man gai | ฿50–60 | $1.49–1.79 | €1.32–1.59 | £1.13–1.35 |
| Gaeng som | ฿60–90 | $1.79–2.68 | €1.59–2.38 | £1.35–2.03 |
The street food safety guide explains how to choose a stall and what to order first. In the clips below, the first shows a stall owner who has kept his dishes at about 30 US cents for years, and the second is a $10 street food challenge at a food festival.
The two decisions that change the total
Two lines move the total more than anything else:
- Distance from the BTS. Staying ten minutes further from a BTS station reliably takes about a third off the room rate for the same room. Over thirty days at $16 a night, that is real money.
- How you get in from the airport. The Airport Rail Link into Bangkok is 45 baht, about $1.30. A taxi is 400 baht or more. Make that choice twice, in and out, and you have saved about a night of accommodation.
Money habits that save money
- ATMs. Foreign cards are charged 220 baht per withdrawal, which is punitive, so take the maximum each time. Cards work in malls and chains.
- Cash. Street food is cash only. Carry small notes.
- SIM. A tourist SIM from AIS or TrueMove is roughly $8 to 12 for 15 to 30 days, with plenty of data. Bring your passport.
- Transport apps. Grab for cars and motorbike taxis, Bolt for cheaper rides in Bangkok. If a taxi driver will not use the meter, walk away.

If you are planning dates, read what changed for visas in September 2026 first. A thirty-day stay now fits the thirty days in the table above exactly.
