Kenya is where East African travel is easiest and least cheap. The safari industry is a century old, extremely well run and priced accordingly — park fees alone run $70–200 per person per day depending on the reserve. That single line dominates any budget, and it is why Kenya sits at nearly double Uganda’s daily cost.
What gets lost is that Kenya has two food cultures worth the trip on their own. Inland is meat: nyama choma, goat or beef roasted slowly and eaten by hand with kachumbari and ugali, in open-air butcheries that operate as social institutions. The coast is entirely different — Swahili cooking with Omani, Indian and Portuguese layers, coconut and tamarind and cardamom, biryanis and grilled fish and the best samosas in Africa.
My advice for a first Kenya trip: less time in the Mara, more time on the coast.
When to go
Best Good Mixed Avoid
July to October is the dry season and the wildebeest migration window in the Masai Mara — spectacular, and priced at a premium with lodges booked a year out. January and February are the other dry window, hotter, quieter and much better value. The long rains in April and May close some camps entirely. The coast is humid year-round and best December to March.
What it costs
| Item | Rate | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation, mixed | $45 / night | $540 |
| Food and drink | $14 / day | $168 |
| Park fees, 3 days | $80 / day | $240 |
| Safari vehicle and guide, 3 days | — | $330 |
| Domestic flight to the coast | — | $95 |
| Ground transport, matatus, tuk-tuks | — | $70 |
| SIM, laundry, sundries | — | $35 |
| Twelve days | $1,478 |
The safari block is $570 of a $1,478 trip for three days. Two ways to cut it honestly: choose a conservancy or a smaller park — Amboseli, Tsavo or Lake Nakuru have lower fees than the Mara and are genuinely excellent — or join a group vehicle rather than a private one, which halves the guide cost.
What to eat
Goat or beef roasted over charcoal, ordered by weight, brought to the table on a board and eaten by hand with ugali and kachumbari. A three-hour meal. Kenyatta Market or Olepolos outside Nairobi.
Stiff maize porridge, the national starch. Not a flavour so much as a utensil — you tear it, dent it with your thumb and use it to lift stew.
Coastal. Fish in coconut and tamarind with cardamom and cumin. Mombasa old town or Lamu. Eaten with rice or chapati.
Coastal breakfast: cardamom-scented sweet doughnuts with pigeon peas in coconut. The best breakfast on the Indian Ocean.
Mombasa’s version is spiced differently from the Indian original — sweeter, with caramelised onion and a lot of cardamom. Friday is biryani day.
Raw tomato, onion, chilli and coriander with lime. On every table, and the thing that makes nyama choma work.
Where to base yourself
| Place | Notes | Nights |
|---|---|---|
| Nairobi | Base in Westlands or Kilimani. The Giraffe Centre and the elephant orphanage are both genuinely worthwhile, and Kenyatta Market is the nyama choma education. | 2–3 nights |
| Amboseli or Lake Nakuru | Lower fees than the Mara, elephants against Kilimanjaro at Amboseli, flamingos and rhino at Nakuru. | 2–3 nights |
| Masai Mara | Only if you have the budget and it is migration season. Fewer than three nights and the drive there eats the value. | 3 nights minimum |
| Lamu or Diani, coast | Lamu for Swahili architecture, no cars and the best food; Diani for the beach. Both fly from Nairobi. | 4 nights |
A route that works
Nairobi: arrive
Get into the city, eat, sleep. Nairobi traffic is genuinely severe — budget two hours for anything at rush hour.
Nairobi: elephants, giraffes, market
Sheldrick elephant orphanage opens 11am for one hour only and must be booked. Kenyatta Market for nyama choma in the afternoon.
Nairobi: museum and Karen
National Museum for the prehistory collection, which is world-class. Karen Blixen house if the colonial history interests you.
Drive to Amboseli
Four to five hours south. Afternoon game drive with Kilimanjaro behind the elephants if the cloud cooperates.
Amboseli: full day game drive
Dawn and late afternoon are the productive hours. Midday is for sitting still in the shade.
Amboseli to Tsavo or back north
Tsavo West if you want to keep going; otherwise back towards Nairobi for the flight.
Fly to the coast
Nairobi to Lamu or Mombasa, roughly $95 and 90 minutes. The alternative is a very long overnight bus.
Lamu: old town
No cars on the island. Walk the alleys, eat mahamri for breakfast, dhow at sunset.
Lamu: Shela and the beach
Twelve kilometres of empty sand. Walk out, get a dhow back.
Lamu: food day
Swahili fish curry, biryani if it is Friday, and coconut everything. The best eating of the trip.
Mombasa old town
Fort Jesus, the spice shops, and the Indian-Swahili food that is the city’s real heritage.
Fly out from Mombasa
Direct international connections, or back via Nairobi.
Practical notes
| Arrival authorisation | The electronic travel authorisation (eTA) replaced visas and is mandatory for almost every visitor. Apply at least three days ahead at etakenya.go.ke. It doubles as the arrival declaration, so there is no separate card. | |
|---|---|---|
| Visa | Kenya replaced visas with a mandatory electronic travel authorisation (eTA) applied for online in advance, around $30 as of 2026. Apply at least three days ahead. The East Africa Tourist Visa also remains valid for Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda together. | |
| Yellow fever | Required if arriving from an endemic country, which includes Uganda and Tanzania. Get the certificate regardless if you are combining East African countries. | |
| Malaria | Risk in the coastal and lakeside areas and in the parks; Nairobi at 1,800m is largely free of it. Prophylaxis advised for coast and safari. | |
| Money | M-Pesa mobile money is genuinely universal — market stalls, tuk-tuks, everything. Cards work in Nairobi and hotels. Park fees are increasingly cashless and card-only. | |
| SIM | Safaricom, without question, for coverage and M-Pesa access. Around $10 for a month with data. | |
| Park fees | Paid per person per 24 hours, in advance, and non-refundable. Masai Mara is $100–200 depending on season, Amboseli and Nakuru around $60–70. Check current rates before budgeting — they rise often. | |
| Safari booking | Book directly with a Kenyan operator rather than an overseas agency; the same vehicle costs substantially less. Ask whether park fees, the guide and drinking water are included, because they often are not. | |
| Etiquette | Greetings first, always. Ask before photographing people, especially Maasai — a fee is often expected and that is reasonable. Plastic bags are banned nationwide and the ban is enforced at the airport. | |
Where your time is better spent
The Mara in a single day trip from Nairobi. It is a twelve-hour round drive for two hours in the park, and the operators selling it know exactly what they are doing.
Skip the "Maasai village" stops bolted onto safari itineraries — most are staged and the money rarely reaches the community. A conservancy-run cultural walk is the honest version. And skip Nairobi’s carnivore-themed restaurants; the nyama choma at Kenyatta Market is better and a tenth of the price.
Before you book
Visa rules, park fees and prices in this guide were checked in September 2026 and they move. Confirm entry requirements with your own foreign ministry and current fees with the relevant authority before committing money.
Twelve phrases in Swahili
Swahili is spoken across East Africa and pronounced exactly as written, with the stress almost always on the second-to-last syllable. English works everywhere in Kenya, but Swahili changes the temperature of an interaction immediately.

The four I get asked most
How much does a Kenya safari actually cost?
Budget $180–250 per person per day for a mid-range trip covering park fees, a shared vehicle, guide and lodge. Luxury camps run $600–1,500. The park fee alone is $60–200 and is unavoidable, which is why Kenya cannot be done cheaply.
Is the migration worth the peak-season premium?
If wildlife is the reason you are coming, yes, but book a year ahead. If you mainly want to see the big animals, January and February in Amboseli or Nakuru give you 80% of the experience at half the price.
Is Nairobi worth spending time in?
Two days, yes. The museum, the elephant orphanage and Kenyatta Market are all excellent, and it is the best food city in East Africa. Traffic is the limiting factor on how much you can fit in.
Kenya or Tanzania for a first safari?
Kenya for infrastructure, ease and coastal food. Tanzania for the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, which are larger and, many argue, more spectacular. Kenya is easier to do independently.
