What you get
  • 250g whole bean, sealed valve bag
  • Roast date printed, never more than three weeks old at dispatch
  • Brewing notes card for plunger, filter and stovetop
  • Ground to order at no extra cost — say so at checkout

Why this one

Eastern Uganda grows arabica at altitude on volcanic soil, and almost all of it leaves the country green, to be roasted and branded somewhere else. This is the same bean roasted locally instead — medium, so the fruit survives, without the scorch that hides it.

It tastes of blackcurrant and cocoa, with enough body to hold up to milk. I brew it in a plunger; it takes an espresso grind well too. If you have only had Ugandan coffee as an anonymous component of a supermarket blend, this is a different proposition.

Bought directly from the co-operative, which means the price paid at origin is roughly double the commodity rate. That is the reason to buy it rather than a cheaper bag.

Questions

How fresh is it when it ships?

Roasted in batches and dispatched within three weeks of the roast date, which is printed on the bag. Coffee is at its best two to four weeks after roasting, so it should arrive in the window.

Can you grind it for me?

Yes, at no extra cost — leave a note at checkout saying plunger, filter, stovetop or espresso. Whole bean keeps considerably longer, so only ask if you have no grinder.
